Although plenty of people enjoy the sense of adventure that comes from heading off on a long haul flight to some far-flung place on the other side of the globe, some prefer to spend just a few hours in the air before embracing the sun – which is part of the reason why Spain is so popular. Beaches

Spain is home to some of the best beaches in Europe and you’ll be left somewhat spoiled for choice when deciding where to go. Head for any of the famous Costas in particular and you’ll find all manner of beaches to suit all tastes, with golden sands on which to relax and a various watersports for those who want to remain active.

History

If you are a love of culture and history then Spain is a fantastic destination for a holiday. You’ll be able to see the influence that different cultures have had on the country during the years. Expect to see the influence of the Greeks and the Romans to name just two before you even begin to explore the different Spanish cultures that exist from one area of the country to another.

Architecture

Linked into history and culture is the stunning architecture that you can expect to see across Spain. Head for Barcelona and the influence of Gaudi can be seen at famous sites like the Sagrada Familia and Park Guell, whilst the Gothic Quarter is packed with interesting buildings that line the narrow Medieval streets. The City Hall in Madrid, Seville’s Plaza de España and the iconic Alhambra palace complex in Granada are further famous structures you might consider visiting.

Cuisine

Foods will love the chance to sample top quality Spanish cuisine, with the country offering dishes to please even the most discerning of palates. Traditional paella to chilled gazpacho to fresh Seville oranges and sweet Churros, a trip to Spain is something of a gastronomic treat for anyone with a love of food. Head for one of the many tapas bars and you’ll be able to enjoy a little bit of everything – all washed down with either a local wine or a refreshing glass of Sangria.

Fun of the fair

Whilst adults will be happy to spend their time lounging by the pool, the kids usually need to be kept entertained – but there are plenty of options in Spain to ensure they don’t get bored. Chief amongst them is the PortAventura resort near to Salou which is home to a large theme park, a waterpark and a new Ferrari-themed attraction whilst you could head for Tivoli World on the Costa del Sol, Parque Warner near Madrid, Tibidado overlooking Barcelona or one of the many waterparks sure to entertain.

Festivals galore

Head for Spain and there is a good chance that you will be able to time your trip around one of the many colourful festivals that take place every year.  The likes of the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, La Tomatina in Buñol, Semana Santa (or Holy Week), the Fallas of Valencia and the Wine Battle of La Rioja are just a handful of the popular festivals that you might want to enjoy during your Spanish soujourn.

Natural Beauty

Away from the beaches and the big cities, there is plenty to see if you decide to head off the beaten track to explore the Spanish landscapes. The Picos de Europa region to the north is particularly noteworthy with its towering peaks and impressive valleys but there are numerous other national parks where you can embrace Spain’s scenic beauty or try to spot some of the native wildlife.

Sports galore

If you are a fan of sports then Spain is a destination that will hold plenty of appeal, with a range of sports-related attractions and the opportunity to take in some high quality action whilst away from the home. Head for Barcelona or Madrid and you could watch two of the most famous names in world football in action or visit the museums that tell the story of their rich history, whilst Spain’s Formula One race is one of the most popular on the calendar. Visit in Autumn and you could follow the Vuelta a España cycling race around the country or you could simply try the many championship golf courses.

Value

If you want to make your money go as far as you can when booking a holiday then Spain could be the place for you. Okay so the value of the pound against the Euro isn’t as good as it could be, but Spain is one of the cheaper options when it comes to an overseas adventure – even if you want to book on an All Inclusive basis. When you get there, you’ll also find that the actual cost of things isn’t too bad compared to back home if you are going self-catering and will need to stock up whilst away in the sun.
