Introduction to Albufeira

Albufeira is located in the centre of the Algarve with a transfer time of around 30 minutes. You can be basking in the glorious heat within 5 hours of leaving you home! The flight time is just 2 hours 30 minutes from the UK followed by a short transfer and you will be enjoying your holiday before you know it. Albufeira was once a small fishing village right up until the influx of tourists from around 1960. The resort has since developed into a major holiday resort with an excellent choice of accommodation, beaches and activities to suit all holidaymakers. Albufeira is open throughout the year; therefore you can enjoy a fun filled warm summer holiday or a quiet relaxing winter holiday in the sun. The temperatures can reach highs of around 28-30 degrees during the height of the summer months, perfect sunbathing weather. During the winter the temperature drops to around 15 degrees, still warm enough to enjoy a relaxing holiday with trips to the beach.

Beaches in Albufeira

The resort has a total of around 25 beaches with 2 main beaches to relax on, Fishermans Beach and Albufeira Beach. Relax on the sun loungers and parasols available to hire on Fishermans Beach or try out the watersports on offer. Overlooking the beach there are plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy. Just a short walk from Fishermans Beach you will find Albufeira Beach, this can be reached via a tunnel close to the tourist office. With over 30 km of golden sand and crystal clear water you are totally spoilt for choice of where to relax. There are a number of Blue Flag Beaches thanks to their fantastic facilities and cleanliness. Some of the beaches are small secluded coves surrounded by walls of rock which stretch to long sandy beaches. All the beaches have a selection of watersports on offer for you to try out as well as sun loungers and parasols to relax on. After you have spent the day sunning yourself and splashing about in the sea, why not treat yourself to a relaxing meal in one of the beach front restaurants or a drink in one of the bars.

Things to do in Albufeira

Albufeira has an old town to explore as well as the marina and new part of the resort. The old town has pretty cobbled streets to wander through with small intimate cafes, bars and restaurants. Here you will also find a variety of local shops selling local crafts and produce. This is a more relaxed part of the resort with a main square surrounded by street cafes where you can enjoy a quiet drink or 2 whilst watching people going about their daily business. If you are looking for a lively holiday with a great choice of nightly entertainment, head to Areias de Sao Joas, where you can party until the sun rises! This area is approximately 2 km away from the quieter old town of Albufeira. The marina is the area where you can enjoy boat trips, diving excursions and fishing trips. By the marina there is a long promenade where you can take romantic strolls, let the kids skip along or sit and watch the world go by. Around the corner from the marina you will find the fishing port, where the boats sail in and out all day long and get a stunning view of Albufeira. Aqualand is a fantastic waterpark for the whole family to enjoy. Race down the waterslides, laze in the lazy river or relax on one of the many sun loungers dotted around. The kids will enjoy a trip to Zoomarine, Algarves most popular theme park. There are dolphins, sea lions, tropical birds and birds of prey to name a few. As well as fantastic selection of animals and wildlife, there are plenty of aquariums, 4D cinema, swimming pools and amusements. The Municipal Market in Calicos offers local produce including vegetables, dried fruits, sweets and fish. Monthly markets are held and are very popular with tourists as well as locals. You can haggle over the price of your gifts to take home whether it is local crafts, handmade leather goods or an item of clothing. There are plenty of public swimming pools in the resort, the Municipal Stadium and the Municipal Pavilion. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy the 3 golf courses in Albufeira, Pine Cliffs Sheraton, Salgados and Balaia Golf Village.

Nightlife in Albufeira

Nightlife in Albufeira is mainly centred around Areias de Sao Joas where there are numerous nightclubs and bars for all to enjoy. A majority of the nightclubs are open from dusk until dawn, leaving you party all night long. In the Old Town the nightly entertainment can be found on the Street of Bars....You won't know where to start! Start with a meal in one of the restaurants then head to one of the many bars. Try out the cocktails and local drinks before heading to one of the nightclubs. If it's a quiet night you are looking for, there are areas of the resort where you can enjoy a romantic meal or a quiet relaxing drink. It's in these restaurants around the marina that you will find local delicacies including Cataplana, sardines, tuna and a variety of other seafood's.

There is a good selection of shops and supermarkets within the resort, providing you with your everyday holiday essentials. There are hotels for those with a higher budget. Stay in a 5 star All Inclusive hotel with nothing to worry about apart from where the bar and restaurant is and to make sure you have secured your sun bed for the day! Albufeira has 2 main beaches to relax on followed by a further 25 smaller beaches so you won't have any problems with finding a sandy spot. The beaches stretch for 30 km along the coastline and range from secluded spots to very busy stretches of sand. The 2 main beaches are Albufeira Beach and Fishermans Beach, both a short walk from each other. Albufeira Beach is accessed via a tunnel in the cliffs. Both these beaches have a number of watersports to try out including pedaloes, jet skis and water skiing. They are both backed by an excellent choice of bars and restaurants offering a good selection of dishes and drinks.

Some of the beaches in the resort have been awarded the Blue Flag award for their cleanliness and facilities. With its vast number of beaches both secluded and large, you are totally spoilt for choice, if one is busy you can move on to the next beach to ensure you get a spot in the sun.

Albufeira Old Town has cobbled side streets with intimate bars, romantic restaurants and small cafes to relax in. There are shops to have a look in whilst you are wandering round taking in the pretty surroundings. In the little shops, down the quiet cobbled streets, there are local crafts to purchase, little handmade goods, holiday essentials and a variety of souvenirs. This relaxed area of the resort is the perfect place to sit in one of the cafes or bars.

In Albufeira there are remains of a castle dating back to the Roman times. During festivities in the resort the clock face, the only part that remains intact, is illuminated. When you head to the marina you will notice the brightly coloured houses and the stunning beaches. Sit in a bar or cafe and watch the boats sail in and out dropping off their daily catches. You could always go and have a bite to eat in one of the restaurants and try the freshly caught fish. From the marina you can take a boat trip, fishing trip, try out a diving trip or go on a sunset cruise. There is a promenade running along the marina with bars and restaurants, ideal for a romantic walk and watching the sun set.

Are you travelling with children who like water parks? Aqualand is an excellent venue for the whole family to enjoy. Relax and float round the lazy river on a rubber ring, soak up the sun on a sun lounger, hide away from the midday sun under the parasols or have a swim in one of the pools. Let those that are full of energy have fun on the waterslides whilst the kids can enjoy the separate swimming pool and play area, everyone will have something to do!

Zoomarine is the Algarve's most popular theme park. It is home to a wide selection of wildlife and animals including tropical birds, dolphins, sea lions and birds of prey. Not only are there animals and wildlife at Zoomarine, you can also enjoy the animated beach with white sand, wave pool, aquatic play ground and swimming pools. For those that love to play golf, there are 3 golf course within easy reach.

Known as 'The Strip', Areias de Sao Joas is the main area for nightlife in Albufeira. This is where the nightclubs are open from dusk until dawn, some are open nearly 24 hours a day! Areias de Sao Joas is roughly 2 km from the quieter part of the resort, so you are able to stay in and among it all or away from the hustle and bustle. Along 'The Strip' you will discover a wealth of bars, clubs and restaurants. The bars offer a wide selection of drinks, cocktails and shots as well as nightly entertainment. For a more relaxing evening, stop at The Old Town area of Albufeira. This area is directed more towards families with children, older couples and those looking for a quiet evening. Around the marina, the restaurants offer local freshly caught delicacies like sardines, tuna and other seafood, it is certainly worth trying.
