Introduction to Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz is one of the oldest resorts in Tenerife. It is situated in the North of the island and is very popular with British tourists returning year after year. The resort is full of history with everything centred round the main fishing port. Whether you are travelling as part of a group, with your family or as a lone traveller, Puerto de la Cruz has something for everyone to enjoy. Throughout the year the temperature is quite pleasing. During the main season of June to August, the temperatures are around 28-30 degrees, warm enough to top up your tan, but don't forget the sun tan lotion! In the quiet season from October to March the temperatures are around 18-22 degrees, bit like our summers we get in the UK. You will need something to pop over your shoulders when the sun goes down. A flight to Tenerife takes approximately 4 hours 30 minutes followed by a transfer time of 30 minutes from Tenerife North Airport.

Beaches in Puerto de la Cruz

The beaches in Puerto de la Cruz are full of beautiful golden sands all set out along the volcanic coastline. Some of the beaches have black sand from the volcanoes. The Garden Beach is located in the North of the resort and stretches for miles and miles. This beach is very popular so you will need to get there early to get yourself a great spot with a sun lounger and parasols. There are water sports on the beach to have some fun on, or just relax and take in the views. Playa Bollullo is set out the way slightly at the bottom of a cliff where the waves crash against the shoreline. It is the perfect beach for some peace and tranquillity. There is a small pebble beach right by the harbour in the centre of the resort. The beach is usually used by the locals the locals who like to dip their toes in the sea and enjoy a little swim.

Things to do in Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz has an Old Town which is centred around the old fishing port. It is full of narrow streets with intimate bars and restaurants and little shops selling a variety of locally produced crafts and gifts. The harbour is a great place to visit. Sit in a bar and watch the boats sail in and out or just relax people watching. Not only will you find quaint little shops, you will also find top quality boutiques. If you have children travelling with you, head to Loro Parque for a fun filled day out. It is an animal adventure park with dolphin and sea lion shows as well as parrot shows. The kids will have a fantastic time. A great place for the whole family to enjoy a day out is Lago Martianez, a water park full of swimming pools, play areas and an excellent choice of water slides. There is even a salt water lake surrounded by sub tropical gardens. The water park is perfect for all ages, let the younger ones get rid of their steam in the kids swimming pool with play areas which have slides and climbing frames. The older children can enjoy the water slides whilst those who want to relax can do just this in the lazy river or on one of the sun loungers surrounding the pools. Along the harbour there are plenty of shops to browse round, bars to sit in and restaurants to dine in. You can sit in a bar and watch the boats come and go whilst enjoying the smell of the food stalls dotted around the port. In the Old Town there are salt water swimming pools which were designed by Cesar Manrique. Amongst this complex there is a Jacuzzi, play area for children, 7 swimming pools, changing facilities, fountain, restaurants and a casino. This is defiantly worth visiting when you are on holiday here. Orotava Valley is located on the outskirts of the resort, a perfect spot for nature spotting and views of the Teide, Spain's highest mountain. Exploring Orotava Valley is best done on foot. You can take it the sites including The Church of Nuestra Senora de la Pena and the Castle of San Felipe. Teide National Park is home to a wide variety of wildlife and flowers. The name Teide National Park comes from Teide, Spain's highest mountain standing at 3,718 metres high. There are plenty of shops in Puerto de la Cruz selling a variety of local crafts and souvenirs to take home.

Nightlife in Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz has a fairly quiet nightlife with the bars and restaurants around the fishing port. There are a few nightclubs to enjoy in the resort. Down by the harbour there is a casino for those that fancy a little bit of gaming. The bars and restaurants welcome families with children as well as groups of friends. It is a very friendly resort. Along the harbour there are food stall serving an excellent selection of typical Canarian food, be brave and try something a bit different.

Accommodation in Puerto de la Cruz

There are a number of beaches in Puerto de la Cruz, the main one being the Playa Jardin which was landscaped by Cesar Manrique. A beach of fine black sand approximately 1km in length stretching from the old town of Punta Brava to Castillo San Felipe on the west side of town. The beach provides a backdrop of expansive tropical gardens and there is a breakwater that protects the swimming area. There are plenty of services - a restaurant, showers, toilets and changing rooms making this a popular beach which can get crowded.

It is also worth mentioning the small and perfectly formed Playa Martianez which is located next to the Lago Martianez. This naturally dark volcanic beach has undergone a range of improvements with a jetty parallel to the shore to stop the back wash and an increase in the beaches width so that there is more space for sunbathing. This beach tends to be quieter and is a great place to relax and watch the surfers while being within walking distance of many restaurants and bars.

A bit further out, Playa El Bollullo is possibly the most beautiful beach in Tenerife and is 4km east of Puerto de la Cruz making it a great beach to get away from the crowds. A dark volcanic sand beach in a secluded bay surrounded by dramatic cliffs, it is a 40 minute walk on the coastal path from Puerto and other than a cafe there are no other facilities.

Central to Puerto de la Cruz at the harbour and alongside the Plaza del Charco is a smaller pebble beach favoured by local Canarians. Here you can sunbath on the harbour walls or swim in the sheltered waters of the bay. The harbour walls are great for jumping into the harbour or you can just sit and relax and people watch from one of the many bars or cafes.

One of the most popular attractions in Puerto de la Cruz is the Lago Martianez, designed by Cesar Manrique, this waterpark is a sight to behold and can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. The waterpark boasts a great selection of seawater pools, water slides, foot bridges and water falls all within beautiful tropical garden landscapes. There are plenty of facilities for sun bathing on the sun terraces and a good range of restaurants, cafes and bars. Even culture seekers will enjoy the water park which is known to be the largest outdoor museum of contemporary art in Europe that is within a water park. The entrance fee includes sunbed and mattress.

Loro Parque is another must see when holidaying in Puerto de la Cruz where you will need to take at least a day to see everything. The extensive tropical gardens are home to a huge range of exotic birds, most notably one of the largest collections of parrots which gives the park its name Loro meaning parrot. At the park you will find the largest artificial iceberg for the resident colony of penguins as well as the biggest dolphinarium in Europe. In addition there are tigers, gorillas, killer whales and other fantastic wild life to see which is sure to be a great hit for those visiting with families.

It is worth taking an excursion to the Teide National Park where it is possible to take a cable car to the top of the Mount Teide volcano which dominates the skyline of the resort. You will be rewarded with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and the short aerial journey will take you over the craters and past lava flows which now form this alien landscape. The smoke plumes remind you that this is still an active volcano though the last major eruption was over 300 years ago. Once you reach the top there are a number of walking trails to different viewing platforms.

For those needing a golf fix the local golf course La Rosaleda Golf Club is located just 5 minutes from the centre of Puerto de la Cruz. Set within banana plantations and giving fantastic views over the Orotava Valley and the Atlantic Ocean, there is no better place to relax. If you're a beginner wanting lessons or just want to improve your short game the 9 hole, par 27 golf course has a putting green, driving nets and a practice bunker.

Finally if you're visiting Puerto de la Cruz in February look out for the Carnival which is celebrated on Shrove Tuesday. Huge parades take over the town and it is almost comparable in size to the event that takes place in Rio where those taking part wear colourful costumes. The whole thing ends with an open air party with an impressive firework finale.

The nightlife is quite laid back in this historical resort with a lot of time spent socialising and dancing. There are plenty of bars and restaurants offering live entertainment in the form of bands, salsa or even comedy shows. However it is common place to spend much of the evening enjoying a bottle of wine in a pavement cafe people watching. If you're looking for nightclubs then there are plenty along the Avenida Generalisimo but these don't really get going until the early hours.
