Colosseum
The Colosseum dates back thousands of years and is arguably the most famous structure within Rome. The ancient building is one of the largest amphitheatres to have ever been built and would once have been the place where the best Roman gladiators went into battle in front of tens of thousands of spectators. Sistine Chapel
The Sistine Chapel is located within the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City and is famous for the works of Michelangelo that adorn the ceiling, and for the frescoes created by a number of Renaissance painters that depict the Life of Moses and the Life of Christ. The chapel can be visited as part of the Vatican Museums.
St Peter’s Basilica
St Peter’s Basilica is one of the largest – and most famous – churches in the world and is situated within the Vatican. One of the most stunning examples of Renaissance architecture around, the UNESCO World Heritage site has become a place of pilgrimage for Catholics from across the world and houses various impressive frescoes and sculptures. The church looks down on St Peter’s Square, which is worth a visit in its own right.
Trevi Fountain
Designed by leading architect Nicola Salvi, the Trevi Fountain is a public fountain that dates back to the 1760s and which stands more than 80ft tall – making it one of the largest city fountains in the world. Make sure to take a coin with you to make a wish – just make sure to use your right hand and to throw over your left shoulder as you make a wish.
Pantheon
The famous Pantheon sits in the Piazza della Rotonda and dates back to around 125AD. Continually in use, the Pantheon – which is now a church – remains one of the best preserved examples of Roman architecture around, with a dozen columns standing proudly around the main entrance.
Villa Borghese
Villa Borghese is one of the largest public gardens to be found within Rome and has long been a popular attraction with visitors to the city. The park is filled with fountains and sculptures as well as the Galleria Borghese – which is home to a wide selection of different artworks.
Aventine Hill
Aventine Hill is one of the Seven Hills of Rome on which the city was built. It’s well worth a visit because of the impressive views you get across the city – including a special lookout that gives the chance to marvel at the iconic dome of St Peter’s Basilica.
Via Condotti
If you want to sample some high end shopping during your time in Rome then the area around Via Condotti is the place to go Prada, Armani and Gucci are amongst the big names you’ll encounter alongside various other fashion boutiques, whilst the Spanish Steps – a steep staircase of 135 steps – are nearby.
