Introduction to Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen is located on the East coast of Lanzarote and is the busiest resort on the island. The resort is ideal for those who like to explore, relax and party. There is something for everyone here in Puerto del Carmen. The traditional fishing village has been developed into a very popular resort. Puerto del Carmen is ideal for those who are looking for a relaxing holiday with the choice of nightly entertainment and beautiful beaches. The resort is 10 km from the airport. A flight to Lanzarote takes approximately 4 hours from London. With a short transfer time from the airport to the resort, the kids in your party won't need to be entertained for long. Summer in Lanzarote is warm, sunny and dry. The temperatures usually hit around 30-33 degrees in the height of the summer months. If you like a bit of winter sun, here in Puerto del Carmen the thermometer reaches 18-23 degrees. Sun all day with the odd rain shower, yet still warm enough to boast a tan.

Beaches in Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen has numerous beaches with several being awarded with the Blue Flag award. The main beach in Puerto del Carmen is called Playa Grande. On this beach there are sun loungers and parasols available to hire, ideal if you want to relax for the day. If you have a bit more energy there are plenty of water sports to try out. You can go snorkelling, use the jet skis, para sailing or even take some diving lessons. Playa Grande is the largest beach on the island making it an ideal beach for families and couples. The water at Playa Grande is crystal clear and calm, perfect swimming conditions. Alongside the Old Town is a sheltered beach, perfect for relaxing. Matagorda Beach is a smaller beach with a quiet atmosphere, if it's total relaxation and peace and quiet you are looking for this is the beach to come to for the day. You can hire a bicycle from here and go exploring the area. Los Pocillos is a great beach for windsurfing as it is quite exposed to the winds. El Barranquillo beach is a small and sheltered making it a great beach for sunbathing. The beaches all have sun loungers, parasols and a variety of water ports on offer. Some have showers and changing facilities. The main beaches are lined with a promenade which has shops, bars and restaurants to enjoy.

Things to do in Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen is a great fun filled resort and has some fantastic activities for families, couples and groups of friends to enjoy. The Old Town is centred round a fishing harbour and port where there are some amazing restaurants to dine in. You can choose from freshly caught seafood dishes, Italian dishes or typical Canarian cuisine, whatever takes your fancy there is something for all taste buds. Rancho Texas Park is in Puerto del Carmen. This theme park has something for everyone. There are birds, animal and a fantastic leisure area. Watch the bird of prey shows, sea lion shows and dolphin shows, these are just a few of the many show on offer. There is a leisure area with a large swimming pool and sunbathing area. Let the children splash in the pool or play the various water games whilst you sit back and relax on a sun lounger under an umbrella or a tree. The swimming pool area has changing facilities, showers and toilets. Lifeguards are on offer to help if needed. If you are feeling a bit peckish head to the on-site restaurant serving a variety of snacks, meals and drinks throughout the day. Biosfera Plaza is situated between the old and new town areas of the resort. It is a 5 storey shopping centre with designer shops as well as local boutiques. There is a children's play area in the shopping centre as well as restaurants and snack bars. In July the Fiesta de Carmen is held and has dancing singing and folklore performances. For the golf lovers there is an 18-hole golf course a short distance from Puerto del Carmen. This golf course has stunning views of the nearby island of Fuerteventura. If you are a beginner why not have a few lessons with an instructor or have a go at the driving range. La Tinosa is a relaxing area set round the fishing harbour where there are bars and restaurants to relax in. Do you want to take in the scenery? You can hire a bicycle and ride around the area or take a walk through the resort and along the coastal road towards Playa de los Pocillos and Matagorda or Puerto Calero.

Nightlife in Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen has an excellent nightlife and known to have the busiest nightlife in Lanzarote. There are bars, restaurants and clubs all over the resort, in both the new and the old town. Down by the harbour there are restaurants serving an excellent selection of locally caught seafood and bars to sit and watch the world go by. Centro Atlantico and Avenida de las Playas are where the nightlife is mainly centred. Some of the bars here have live music on a daily basis whilst others have djs. This is the place to head if you are with a group of friends and mainly for the young and lively! There is an excellent choice of restaurants along the strip ranging from snack bars and fast food outlets to intimate and luxury restaurants. They serve anything from local cuisine to International dishes.

Accommodation in Puerto del Carmen

There are 3 main beaches in Puerto del Carmen that make up part of the 6km of glorious golden sandy coastline. All credited with the Blue Flag standard for cleanliness and low pollutants (an award that comes from the EEC).

The beaches stretch from the Old Town Harbour almost continuously until you reach the Hotel San Antonio. If you go in the other direction there are a further 9km of beach, however the beaches at Puerto del Carmen are more sheltered and it is easy enough to walk between them should you wish to try different beaches during your stay.

The longest stretch of beach is 1.2km long and aptly named the Playa Grande. This beach is perfect for families with young children or toddlers as it is both safe and has excellent facilities. The beach slopes gently into the sea and the waters are calm with very little current for safe paddling and swimming. You can rent hammocks and sunshades and there are showers, changing areas and toilet facilities close by. Also the beach is cleaned daily. Please bear in mind that during the high season Playa Grande can get crowded.

Los Pocillos Beach is where you'll find the windsurfers. This stretch of sandy beach is windy but with calm waters. If you fancy taking up windsurfing then head for this beach. Its calm waters mean that it is family friendly and if you are in the area in the early evening, many of the restaurants let children eat for free.

If you're in the Old Harbour then Playa Chica is your closest beach. A small family friendly cove with calm waters ideal for snorkelling and diving. There is a dive school on the beach if you are looking for a new hobby. You can also try jet-skiing and parascending if you want something a bit faster paced.

The main attraction is obviously the beach and you'll find no end of activities to keep you busy. Anything from windsurfing, snorkelling, kite surfing and diving to parascending and pedalo hire there is sure to be something that will interest you. Obviously if you want to work on your tan you can just hire a sunbed and swim in the lovely warm and calm waters along this part of the coastline.

As far as finding something to eat you'll have no problem discovering something to tempt you as there are literally hundreds of eateries to choose from. The beach fronts are lined with restaurants of every description so you are sure to find something to suit your appetite. Head for the Old Town where many of the restaurants have outdoor terraces that overlook the marina.

The Rancho Texas Park is a popular choice for families with children where you can go swimming with sea lions, or watch the bird of prey display. You can also go and see the Indian Village or the Medicine Man Cave amongst the many other attractions that will keep your little ones entertained. There is also a water park at the Rancho which is always a big hit. In the evening you can enjoy an American BBQ while watching live bands.

Often cited as one of the best things to do while in Lanzarote a visit to Timanfaya National Park is well worth the journey. You can enjoy the sights of the park on board a camel train which spends 25 minutes travelling around the space age volcanic landscape, the kids will love it. There is also a museum and you can take a rest at Parks little cafe.

There are plenty of shops in Puerto del Carmen which are aimed at the tourist trade, however if you don't mind a 10 minute taxi ride you can visit Arrecife, Lanzarote's capital and enjoy a beer in the more cosmopolitan surroundings of the Canarian bars that face the beach.

In Arrecife there are some wonderful craft shops and boutiques, along with designer clothes shops and malls, plenty to satisfy a bit of retail therapy while enjoying a coffee or beer along the way. Also if you visit Arrecife on a Wednesday you can wander around the market and barter with the local traders and bag a bargain in the process.

If you fancy a little bit of Lanzarote history you could visit Castillo de san Gabriel on the tiny Islote de los Inglese (Islet of the English). The castle was built in the 16th century to protect the town and the harbour of Arrecife. There are some stunning views of the city and the Atlantic Ocean.

There are many bars along the strip facing the Playa Grande beach which regularly have live bands or comedy acts. You could also visit the Avenida de las Playas (Avenue of the Beaches) facing Playa de los Pocillos where you'll find a selection of jazz clubs and cocktail lounges.

If you want to dance you can visit the Centro Comercial Atlantico which houses discos and nightclubs. There is also a selection of ice cream parlours and many amusement arcades to tour around in the evening.
