Introduction to Praia da Rocha

Praia da Rocha is home to one of the largest beaches along the Portimao coastline. The resort offers guests a beautiful beach and various activities for all ages. You can enjoy a relaxing holiday here throughout the whole year thanks to its warm climate throughout the year. Located in the South West of Portugal in the Algarve region, Praia da Rocha welcomes families, couples and groups of friends looking for a fun filled holiday with a great atmosphere. The resort is a 1 hour transfer time from Faro Airport with a flight time of 2 hours 40 minutes from the UK. The sun is out throughout the tear in the Algarve, a perfect spot for a bit of winter sun. During the winter the sun is high in the sky and reaches temperatures of 13-16 degrees, beautiful blue skies with a little warmth too. During the summer the thermometer hits around 25-27 degrees. So pack your suitcase with your swim shorts, bikinis and flip flops and jump in a plane out to Praia da Rocha.

Beaches in Praia da Rocha

Praia da Rocha has a beautiful beach with soft golden sands and crystal clear waters. On the beach you can enjoy a variety of watersports including jet skis and banana boats or just relax and soak up the warm Portuguese sun on a sun lounger with a parasols, you never know you may need it when the sun gets too warm. Most of the beaches in the Algarve are classified as ‘Accessible Beaches' as they provide ramps and footpaths directly on to the beach as well as disabled toilets and first aid posts. The main beach in Praia da Rocha is located right by Portimao Marina. There is a walkway that runs the length of the beach with beach huts, cafes, bars, restaurants and shops. The walkway is suitable for wheelchair users and families with pushchairs.

Things to do in Paria da Rocha

This resort has lots to see and do, all within easy reach and will suit the whole family. There is a fort named Fortaleza da Santa Caterina, at the Eastern end of the main beach. This fort was built in 1691 to protect the River Arade. If you climb to the top of the fort you can admire the stunning views across Praia da Rocha, the marina and Ferragudo. It is a fantastic setting to watch the beautiful sun set. Take a walk along the cliff tops from Tomas Cabreira Avenue to Praia do Vau or the cliff top road. From here you can see all the beaches below. It certainly is worth taking the walk up here. Portimao Sardine Festival is a popular festival which takes place in August. This festival has fireworks and live music every evening. If it is shopping and bargain hunting you prefer, Praia da Rocha has plenty of markets and flea markets. Portimao Market is held on the first Monday of each month, Lagoa Market is the second Sunday of every month and Lagos Market is the first Saturday of every month. These markets are fantastic for purchasing your gifts to take home for your friends and family you left behind. There is a Flea Market on nearly every Sunday at various locations. The seller's love a bit of bartering so be prepared to haggle the price down! From the beach there are boat trips and fishing trips available from the many kiosks. You can even go dolphin watching, the kids will love it! Do you like the zoo? There is a zoo, Parque Zoologico de Lagos on the edge of Lagos. The zoo is full of all sorts of animals and wildlife, perfect for the whole family to enjoy. The Zoomarine Park is within easy reach and is open all year round and has birds of prey, sea lion and dolphin shows and tropical birds. This is an excellent day out for all the family. Everyone loves to go to a water park whatever their age is. There are 2 water parks within easy reach of Praia da Rocha, Aqualand near Alcantarilha and Slide and Splash. These parks are open during the main season from April until October. Both have a great selection of water slides and swimming pools to suit everyone. There is a kids section with climbing frame and slides and a relaxing area with sun loungers and parasols.

Nightlife in Praia da Rocha

The nightlife in Praia da Rocha is centred on the Avenida Tomas Cabreira which runs along the top of the beach. Along this promenade there are plenty of bars and restaurants to wine and dine in. You will even find a casino. Have a spot of gaming whilst enjoying a drink. The casino holds nightly shows and dancing too. The casino makes for a fantastic night out. The restaurants offer an excellent choice of local and International cuisine. Try some typical Portuguese dishes or if you have International taste buds, head for the International restaurants. The bars liven up in the evenings with live music, dancing and drinking. Most of the bars welcome families as well as groups of friends. By the marina there are intimate bars and restaurants serving excellent seafood dishes. Sometimes on the beach there are beach parties to enjoy as well as beach front bars. The resort is excellent for nightclubs, bars and restaurants for families, couples and groups of friends.

Praia da Rocha is full of fantastic hotels ranging from 2 star up to 5 star hotels. You can rent a private villa or apartment if you want to travel on a self catering basis. The villas and apartments usually have a private pool and are perfect to holiday at your own pace. The hotels offer a bed & breakfast, half board, full board and all inclusive basis. There is something for every budget and holiday type. The kids will love the all inclusive hotels....they can have as much ice cream as they like!

The main beach in Praia da Rocha stretches for 2 km of soft golden sand with beautiful turquoise waters lapping at the shore. The beach has a whole manner of water sports available to enjoy. You could try water skiing, jet skiing, wind surfing, paragliding and even pedaloes for the family. If you'd rather sit on the beach and relax with a book, sun beds and umbrellas are available to hire. Nearly all the beaches are accessible for those in wheelchairs or who have buggies for children. The ones that are accessible have wooden walkways leading right on to the beach and accessible toilets with changing areas.

Along the main walkway there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants to enjoy. As this beach is stunning and has a beautiful backdrop it does get very busy especially during the summer months when both locals and tourists flock here in the hundreds. Get down there early for a spot on the sand!

Praia da Rocha has so much to see and do it's hard to know where to start. Perhaps start at the water parks, Aqualand or Splash and Slide. Both the water parks are there for a fun filled day out for families, couples and just about anyone of any age. There are water slides, a lazy river, children's play area, swimming pools, climbing frames, splash zones and areas for chilling out. Sun loungers and parasols are available to relax on and there is a snack bar to enjoy a bite to eat and a drink in, perfect for cooling off.

Splash and Slide also has a number of shows worth watching. Enjoy the Falconry Show with a variety of birds of prey including eagles and hawks. There is a Reptile Show and a Parrot and Macaw Show which shows off the different species and colours of birds. The leisure area spans over 4 hectares, you certainly won't be fighting for space.

Don't forget to visit Zoomarine Park and Parque Zoologico de Lagos, great attractions for the whole family. Zoomarine Park is within easy reach and is open throughout the year. The park has birds of prey, sea lion and dolphin shows and a tropical bird show. There are places to eat and somewhere to cool off with a drink. The children can enjoy the rides that are within the grounds including a train, pirate ship and a log flume. The adults will enjoy it as much as the children will.

Parque Zoologico de Lagos is located on the edge of Lagos. The zoo is a fantastic family day out with so much to see. There are hundreds of different species of birds, mammals, reptiles, fish and plants. Amongst all the animals there is a picnic area, toilets, snack bar, shop and a library.

After spending a few days at the water parks and the zoo, why not head to the 17th century fort, Fortaleza da Santa Catarina. The fort was built to protect the River Arade and is a fantastic viewpoint as you can take in the views of Portimao marina and Ferragudo. If you head along the cliff tops from Tomas Cabreira Avenue all the way to Praia do Vau you can see all the beaches below. From here you will also see an amazing sunset.

Praia da Rocha holds a festival every August named Portimao Sardine Festival with live music and fireworks. It takes place along the water front from the museum all the way up to the Old Bridge and usually starts around 7pm. Throughout the resort you can purchase freshly grilled sardines and pick up an item or 2 from the stalls dotted around. There are plenty of flea markets in Praia da Rocha. On the first Monday of every month Portimao Market is held, Lagoa Market is the second Sunday and Loagos Market is the first Saturday of the month. At these markets there are so many stalls it's hard to know where to begin. There are handmade crafts, locally produced goods and of course your usual holiday gifts to take home. Don't forget to do a bit of bartering, you're likely to get the price down a bit.

One very popular place to spend an evening is the casino! The casino has slot machines and tables to place bets on or enjoy dinner and a show. Avenida Tomas Cabreira runs along the top of the beach and is where most of the lightly entertainment takes place. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to wine and dine in.

The marina is good for a romantic meal or a quiet relaxing drink. The seafood at the marina is amazing as it is freshly caught that day. If you are not keen on seafood, most of the restaurants serve an excellent choice of International dishes as well as traditional Portuguese cuisine.

During the course of the evenings the bars open up and become lively with music and dancing. Families are welcome at the bars in the resort, some more so than others. The beachfront bars are very entertaining and have a great atmosphere, you could even stumble across a beach party or 2.
