Like Benalmadena along the coast, Fuengirola has developed from what was once a small and quaint fishing village into a popular holiday resort on Spain's Costa del Sol.

Situated within easy reach of the international airport in Malaga, the resort is well visited by millions of overseas travellers every year who are drawn in by the impressive beach and the favourable weather conditions.

Book a break to Fuengirola in the height of summer and you can expect to be greeted by temperatures that run into the high 20s, whilst even in the middle of winter, you shouldn't be surprised if the mercury sits firmly in the mid-teen region.

Okay so there might be a chance of some rain, but let's be honest - it's not going to be the drab and dreary experience that you would encounter back home...

The sun, sea and sand of Fuengirola is well suited to couples, families and groups who want to enjoy a HOT Holiday in the sun with accommodation comprising of hotels, apartments and villas meaning there is something to suit all tastes and budgets.

The fact that many are located in coastal positions and provide views over the ocean is simply an added bonus.

The beach might not be quite as big as that in nearby Benalmadena, but the quality isn't any less, with an impressive 7km stretch that runs the length of the resort.

Los Boliches is Blue Flag rated and ideal for those with families thanks to the fact that there is a play area alongside the golden sand, whilst it's a similar story at Las Gaviotas. Both also feature changing areas and the ability to sample a range of watersports if you so desire.

Alongside the beach, a long promenade is home to a wide selection of bars, restaurants and shops which means you won't need to stray far from the sand in order to pick up some refreshments or to take a break from the sun.

As well as those bars along the front, you can find plenty more options when you head into the network of streets that lead to the heart of the resort; which is where you'll encounter the majority of the nightlife.

There's also an increasing number of restaurants that offer cuisine from around the world, although locally caught seafood is one speciality you'd be well advised to check out.

When it comes to things to do, you won't need to go far to find something to entertain all the family.

One of the main attractions is the local zoo, Bioparc, while there is a small water park that is open during peak season. Here, the youngsters can enjoy riding on the slides whilst adults relax in a jacuzzi or take a ride on the lazy river.

Lovers of culture can visit the historic castle that overlooks the resort, whilst the likes of Granada and Malaga are easily accessible on a day trip to provide further insight into Spanish life.

Things To Do

Bioparc

Bioparc is a small zoo that is located in the heart of Fuengirola that has been designed to replicate the natural habitat of the animals found within, which includes crocodiles, gorillas, pygmy hippos and Sumatran tigers. You can walk through landscapes that mimic the likes of Madagascar and the Indo Pacific islands and learn more about the way in which the zoo is working to help conservation through its own special foundation.

Fish Alley

Also known by its true name of Calle Moncayo, Fish Alley is a street that runs off parallel to the beach close to the harbour. As the name would suggest, it's the best place to go in the resort if you want to sample top class seafood - much of which has come from the ocean nearby.

Castillo de Sohail

To say that the history of Sohail Castle has been turbulent would be something of an understatement. In fact, since being built in the 11th century, the castle has been destroyed and rebuilt more than once and now stands as one of Fuengirola's most famous monuments. You can discover more about the history of the castle in a small museum and then take in the impressive views of the resort below.

Aquamijas

Aquamijas is a small waterpark located in Fuengirola that is open throughout the main tourist season. As well an area especially for small children, there is a selection of larger slides, a wave pool and a lazy river. It's the ideal place to go if you want to enjoy a fun-filled day as a family.

Feria de Fuengirola

Like many resorts on the Costa del Sol, Fuengirola plays hosts to various festivals and event every year with the Feria de Fuengirola being one of the best. The huge fair takes place in October and kicks off with a huge firework display that you simply wouldn't want to miss. Alongside traditional fairground rides, you can catch a show or grab a bite to eat from one of the various stalls.

Fuengirola Street Market

The street market takes place in Fuengirola every Tuesday and if you're prepared to look, then you might just find a real bargain to take back home with you following your trip. A huge flea market also takes place on a weekend at the Los Boliches fairground.

Plaza de la Constitucion

Away from the beach, there are few better places to kick back with a drink in Fuengirola than in Constitution Square in the heart of the resort. Here you can sit and watch locals going about their business with a cold beer or a fresh coffee before heading off to explore the shops or to simply take a stroll through the maze of streets that make up the resort.
