Travel to Canico with us

If you want to explore the traditional side to the island of Madeira then the small village of Canico on the east coast of the island is sure to appeal.

Located around 20 minutes away from the capital Funchal, Canico is a great place to visit if you have a desire to embrace some of the stunning beauty for which the island is so well known.

Given how close the capital is, it’s little surprise to see that the weather conditions throughout the year are largely comparable to those that you would encounter on a trip to Funchal.

The means that you can expect to be greeted by high temperatures with plenty of sun during the summer months, and relatively mild winters - albeit with the chance of encountering a shower or two.

Staying in Canico will provide plenty of opportunities to relax, with the traditional old village that is located in the hills above the coast catering for those who want to see what life has been like through the ages.

Take a stroll through the narrow streets and you can spend some time exploring the 18th century church, relaxing with a coffee in the small town square or taking a stroll through impressive botanical gardens.

That’s only one side of the resort however, with the traditional old town sitting on the cliffs above the modern day part of Canico where there are plenty of stylish hotels that have been built to cater for the tourist market and to make the most of the sea views.

Alongside the hotels and promenade you’ll find a small pebble beach whilst there is also a lido area where you can take a refreshing dip – with direct access to the sea also available.

Head away from the resort and there are plenty of walking trails nearby that offer the opportunity to take in the scenic beauty of the island, with rugged hills and lush landscapes being easily accessible from the coastal base.

Things To Do

Canico Mother Church

Dating back to 1873, Canico Mother Church is one of the most famous sites in the town and is seen as a prime example of transitional architecture between baroque and rococo styles. The bell tower is a key feature that stands out on the city landscape and is visible from the surrounding valleys.

Miradouro do Cristo Rei do Garajau

Perhaps better known as Christ the King, the Miradouro do Cristo Rei do Garajau is an art deco statue that is located on the cliffs in Garajau – a short distance away from Canico. Actually finished before the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil, it was built to remember those non-Catholic people who had their bodies thrown from the cliffs back in the days when only Catholic people could be buried on the island.

Bica da Cana

Levada Trails

The Madeiran countyside is covered by a network of irrigation channels that date back to the 16th century, and which are known as levadas. These levadas tend to be located alongside a network of paths that provide the way in which to explore the verdant landscapes.

A black sandy beach that sits close to Canico, Praia do Garajau is a great place to sit back and take in the sun, or to take a refreshing dip in the sea. It’s also one of the best places on the island to visit if you fancy trying your hand at scuba diving, with a cable car that provides easy access from the cliffs above.
