Ever wanted to jet off to the Big Apple to experience the joys of New York in the Winter?
Whether it’s because of the many iconic Christmas films that are set on its bustling streets or simply the amazing decorations that scatter the cityscape, one thing is for sure- New York during the festive period is a holiday on many travellers’ bucket list.
This winter, two members of our Social Media team journeyed over the Atlantic to the city that never sleeps. Here are some of their highlights and top tips for visiting New York during the holidays!
Is New York at Christmas on your Bucket List for 2023?
Brooklyn Bridge:
Now one of the great things about New York is you don’t need to spend a fortune to see some amazing sites. From the Friends Apartment and Carrie Bradshaw's doorstep to the steps of the Met and Central Park- there is so much to do for free! And at the top of your list for a magical free experience of New York should be Brooklyn Bridge. Head down just before sunset to experience the sky erupt in vibrant colours over the Hudson and capture some iconic holiday pics. Or, if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of golden hour, take a stroll along the almost empty bridge first thing on a morning.
Top Tip: If you decide to take a trip to Brooklyn Bridge, definitely keep walking and head down to DUMBO. There are some amazing places to discover there and even better photo opportunities.
Harbour Lights Night Cruise:
Want to see the bright lights of New York from a different perspective? If you don’t like heights, this may be the perfect activity for you. Boarding at pier 83, around a 20 minute walk from Times Square, you can board a 2-hour twilight boat cruise around Manhattan Island and learn all about the history of this amazing destination. Plus, the views are incredible. From the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge to the One world Trade Centre and Chrysler Building- you can see it all from the peaceful waterways of the Hudson.
Top Tip: Try and get to the pier earlier to get a seat on the edges of the outside top deck. I’d recommend sitting on the left of the boat if you want to see the best views of Manhattan skyline up close.
Skylines at Sunset and Starry Nights:
There are many places to catch a bird’s eye view of the iconic New York skyline. From the Edge to the Summit to Top of the Rock to the Empire State Building to One World Observatory and many more- there is a reason why they are so popular! Here are some that the girls visited on their trips and would recommend.
The Edge:
This one is not for those of you who fear heights. Suspended high above Manhattan with glass walls and floor, The Edge offers unbelievable views. If you want to see more of the Huson River, Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge this is the skyline for you.
Top Tip: We went at night, and it was amazing! But be aware, there are no selfie-sticks allowed - but you really don’t need them.
Empire State Building:
Probably the most iconic building in the New York skyline, the Empire State Building also offers amazing views. But if you are looking to learn some fun facts alongside your ascent to the top, then add this stop to your list. With photo ops with King Kong, the chance to sit along side the iconic construction workers and a glimpse into the cinematic history of the building, your guaranteed fun on your way to the top!
Top Tip: When you're in the lift, look up!
Top of the Rock:
Sitting at the rooftop of the Rockefeller Centre, this observation deck has a direct view of the Empire State Building in all it’s glory. Head up there right at sunset and enjoy the serene views of the last of the sunshine rays before the lights go up and the Empire State Building comes alive with dazzling colours.
Top Tip: There are gaps in the protective glass at the top of the building. If you want the perfect photo with no glass aim your camera through this gap. But be sure to hold onto your phone, it's a long way down!
See a Show:
With dozens of shows to choose from, Broadway is bound to have something for everyone in your party to enjoy. If you’re looking for something to kick up the Christmas sparkle in your holiday, then add the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular to your list! From Santa and his Reindeer riding round New York, to magical snow fairies dancing around above your head; it’s no surprise why this show is such a feel-good favourite!
Top Tip: If you are in New York and find yourself with out a ticket to a show and decide you want to experience the wonder of Broadway, try visiting the ticket office in Times Square or Radio City Hall to see if there are any discounted tickets for the shows. Often these can be half price if you check near showtime on the same day.
Dazzling Decorations
Of course, a Christmas time trip to New York wouldn’t be complete without seeing a few decorations on your travels. It is easy to stumble across glittering lights and festive figurines, from designer displays along 5th avenue to snowmen in tinsel aeroplanes- New York certainly has its fair share of decorations. But if you are looking for the big ones here is a list of our favourites:
