We kick off our list with one of the most famous roads in Italy, and one that is on the ‘bucket list’ of drivers from across the globe.

Located to the north of the country, the Stelvio Pass is one of the highest in the Alps and climbs to more than 9,000 feet above sea level.

Close to the border with Switzerland in the municipality of Bormio, the pass was once named as the ‘greatest driving road in the world’ by the TV show Top Gear, and it isn’t hard to see why.

You only need to take a look at one of the many photos that have been taken from the summit to see the challenge that the Stelvio Pass provides.

Approach from the north-west through the Stelvio National Park and you’ll be able to embrace impressive views of mountains and glaciers, whilst you might also be lucky enough to see some of the local wildlife.

That all leads into the main event, and the opportunity to drive up the 48 switchbacks that carry you up the Stelvio Pass itself to the summit.

And if you think it’s a challenge in a car, just consider how tough it must be for those who tackle the Stelvio by bicycle in an attempt to follow in the footsteps of the pros…

Be warned that such is the popularity of the route, it can get busy during peak season and the road will be closed during the winter when snow conditions make it impassable.

Coming next week - take a trip Down Under on a great road trip adventure....
